Donggook Buddhist Chonbop College was founded by Dr. Hu Sung-hyun with the purpose to train the morality teachers in February 1987 (B.E. 2530). The college thereafter was registered to the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order as an Educational Institute for Buddhist Dhamma Teachers. As the Buddhist Institute, its roles in educational operations include provision of learning resources of both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism, supports of Buddhist research and promotion of Buddhist dissemination within domestic and oversea regions. In 2014 (B.E. 2557), the college that was affiliated by MCU produced 90 bachelor degree graduates, 23 master degree graduates and 2 doctoral degree graduates. The graduates now become the propagators of Theravada Buddhism in Korea. The college offers Vipassanā meditation training or seminar for the Koreans and those who are interested.     

Every Autumn and Spring of each year (two times per academic year) the students of Donggook Buddhist Chonbop College will participate the Vipassanā meditation class and other general subjects at MCU, Thailand.

Important Events Related to MCU

Feb 1987: The establishment of Donggook Buddhist Chonbop College and publication of Donggook Buddhist Newspaper (weekly). The founder was Dr. Hu, Sung Hyun. The first dean of the college was Ven. Kim, Jawol.

Sep 1995: The registration to the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order as an education institute for Buddhist Dhamma Teachers.

Year 1998: The establishment of the Korean branch of Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka. An inauguration of the Most Ven. Lee, Do Seong as the 3rd dean of Donggook Buddhist Chonbop College.

Feb 2001: The establishment of Affiliated Institute of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Thailand.

Dec 2008: The establishment of Affiliated Institute on Master’s Degree in Buddhist Studies of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Thailand.

Nov 2013: Special lecture by Most Ven. Prof. Dr. Phra Brahmapundit, former rector of MCU.

Jan 2014: The start of Academic Journal publication called “Donggook Journal” (ISSN 2384 – 0455)

Sep 2014: Special lecture by Most Ven. Prof. Dr. Phra Brahmapundit, former rector of MCU.

Apart from this, Donggook Buddhist Chonbop College has participated annually the United Nations for Day of Vesak Celebration in Thailand, sent students for the Vipassana meditation class at MCU Thailand, received faculty members of MCU to give special classes annually, organized numerous international academic seminar with collaboration from other countries such as Thailand, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, and India.
